We have carried out numerous consumer unit replacements, whether from older rewardable fuses, to early MCB boxes. Installing up to date boxes with a standard RCBO individual circuit protection and Surge Protection Devices.
RCBO's give full protection to individual circuits therefore if there is a fault then that is. the only circuit initially affected. So no nuisance tripping losing all the lights because of faulty toaster
Beware - Home Report din't include this...Visited a Client who moved to a bigger house a reasonably modern house around 1990s build, however., they asked me to carry out an inspection when they found a loose socket. We did a visual inspection finding a few issues including: spur switch supplying the central heating had half its backbox missing - it wasn't even screwed to the wall and supply cables were lying loose. A number of socket faces are loose, and by a few mm so gap visible. Light fitting coming away from the ceiling. Also a Light Switch wasn't even screwed to its backbox, One of the most disturbing was a fused spur with cover on fuse missing exposing the fuse, this was live. The previous owner had also installed external lights on a timer and we have still to find this or a simple way to isolate.. There was also other faults, electrical showers didn't work properly (and wired incorrectly) and plumbing faults that needed professionally rectified.
So when looking at a new house do you look as close to see the faults and what you might have to do to bring it up to a standard that your Lifestyle and more importantly Safety requires. Rely on a Professional for Advice, and get an EICR Done.
Working at client premises, finding serious issues, and where they were probably saved by the operation of RCD's.
Firstly during refurbishment works found a junction box for lighting circuit this was replaced with a unto date junction box ustilising push fit connectors ensuring a sound electric connection
Second Picture, shows a connection this was in a sub fusebox that had been installed years ago to power an electric shower, a combination of loose connections along with a more powerful shower than was originally fitted - replaced cable and fitted direct to consumer unit on its own RCBO.
Customer was looking to upgrade fusebox and check on electrical system
Carried out in the nick of time, the meter tail connections were badly corroded and fell apart when I went near with screwdriver to remove
Customer was delighted and can sleep safely at night.
